"MTRA’s horses are not "just horses"
these wonderful creatures are the instruments of
every-day miracles, each with their own
distinct personality and history"

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has again given a grant to Marion Therapeutic Riding Association, Inc. (MTRA) to provide therapeutic horseback riding and equine assisted activities to folks that are living with the challenges of MS.
MTRA's mission is to promote health, wellness and education while providing the miraculous benefits of therapeutic horseback riding and equine assisted activities to persons of all ages who are challenged with a disability. We have been providing equine assistend activities to persons in Central Florida for over 25 years and are very proud to hold the Premier Accredited ranking from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International, a.k.a. PATH, Int'l.
Our MS program has had a steady attendance for the past three years. Every participant of the program has boasted some measure of success from participating in teh program. 100% of the active participants have stronger core and leg strength. The riders that consistently attended the riding sessions stated that their balance has been improved as a result of participating in the program, thus enjoying a better quality of life. One rider also informed us that her last MRI showed no advancement of her disease and was told she was in remission.
Those that consistently participate enjoy the activity and camaraderie and are truly amazed in the results the program has offered them. Some have been able to discard leg braces, others claim they fall less as a result of better balance, and others are truly grateful for a reason to get up in the morning.
All that have participated in MTRA's therapeutic riding program have claimed at least one success. We, as a center, have the opportunity to work with numerous participants - all in different phases of the disease.
MTRA is beginning another 10 week MS session beginning February 7, 2013 and have openings for three new riders. Please call me if you have any questions on how to enroll in this wonderful activity.
Sincerely,

Laurie Bruun

We have been approved for the Therapeutic Horseback Riding Grant that we were working on getting a grant thru MSF/Copaxone.  If anyone is interested, please complete the information below ASAP  (The grant is only for people with Multiple Sclerosis and does not include care partners).  We will see if there is any way we can add additional people, if not now then you will be at the top of the list for the next session after this one.  You will have a one hour session, one day per week, for 10 weeks.  You will need to contact Lauie Bruun, MTRA Program Director at (352) 732-7300 and let her know you are part of the Marion County MS Group to see if there are still openings.  Volunteers also need to contact the facility themselves at 352-732-7300 to let them know what they are interested in doing and when.  You can download your forms for both Riding and Volunteering at http://www.mtraocala.org/images/mtraocala.org/NewsSub.aspx?contentName=News%20and%20Events&news=1.  For Riders, go to the lower right hand corner under Documents, Click "Rider Signup Info" and "Rider Medical Form" and Print them out and fill them out and have your Neurologist sign the release form.  You must have an MS
Diagnosis.  For Volunteers, Click "Volunteer Greenway Forms" and Print them Out, then fill them out and mail them to MTRA at the above address.   You can visit their web site at http://www.mtraocala.org/images/mtraocala.org/defaultsub.aspx?contentname=Our%20Horses&horselistview=1

3225 SE Maricamp, Ocala (We also have bowling ball with retractable handle for those that would like to use it)  (Of course I'll have to find where I put it...lol)
Come join us for bowling, or just come and cheer us on!

Wed. February 6, 13, 20, 27 and March 6, 13, 20, 27 - AMF Galaxy East - Ocala  - Must Check in at Desk by 9:45 a.m. - You will always find our group on lanes 21 & 22 just ask at desk for the MS Group.  (Jean, Ruthie and her Mom, Art/Peg, Cathy/Red, Mitzi are regulars...sometimes Tom/Juanita join us and we have friends Janet and Linda that are regulars that join our group).  Phyllis and Lisette also come to cheer us on every couple of weeks.  After bowling we normally go out to lunch.  We can reserve the end lanes any time we know ahead of time that we need the for scooters, wheelchairs, etc.  The cost is $9.00 for 3 games (There was a price increase of $1.00, but you automatically get a coupon for a free game of open bowling any time within 30 days and they added back in an extra colored pin) and you can win money by picking up splits, getting a strike on colored headpin, buying 6 tickets for $1.00 and having your number called and getting 50 cents for each pin you knock down on next turn on First Ball thrown and many other ways to win.  The 1st and 3rd Wed. are Double money except for ticket drawings.  There is no competition between people...anyone can win money and it's all for fun!  You must sign in at their desk by 9:45 a.m. on that Wednesday to participate.  It will go til 12:00 p.m.  They are making special provisions for us.  Also, for those that are not able to bowl 3 games due to physical limitations, they will let us share the games...in other words one person in a scooter might bowl 2 games and another bowl the other game and split the cost.  This is only for people that are unable due to physical limitations.  This is the reason we changed all of our other group activities to 1:00 p.m, so that anyone that wanted to do the bowling and still participate in our other activities could do both.  Let's have a great turn-out.  It's alot of fun!  If you don't feel like bolwing, remember you can always come and join us and cheer us on and join us for lunch afterwards.  Please RSVP
